"Community Clouds"

Someone threw this term across my screen today thinking it would impress me and I would have to explain the way a Community Cloud would differ from the standard Public, Private and Hybrid clouds already recognized by the IT community.

Here is my explanation: A Community Cloud is much like a Community or Junior College. You can go to a community college for the cheap and receive an "OK" education and when you finally graduate, you can be accepted to any Public College using you transfer. You could also apply to get into a Private College as a transfer but it is going to cost you MUCH more to attend. A Community Cloud follows this same principal...NOT!

There isn't a "Community Cloud". There is a Public Cloud which is freely available to anyone on the internet, a Private Cloud which is basically kept from direct Internet access, and Hybrid which uses a combination of the two to meet the needs of the business.

One of the reason the term is trying to be adapted is to help standardize how cloud computing is delivered. Because the technology is so "new" (which it really isn't), some people feel that they need to take what they do not fully understand and try to make it better.

So here is the truth...a true cloud provider uses standards based systems and manage according to standards-based practices such as ITIL, FISMA, NIST and ISO. They would deliver products according to CMMI, PMP, and PRINCE2. The standards are already in place, the providers you choose should use the standards.

Security is another reason for the new term as well. If the cloud provider is setting up your environment and hasn't taken your data and personal security into account, then the risk of your data being compromised is high and the odds of the provider being able to pass FISMA, HIPAA, SOX or any other compliance requirements are slim.

If your provider feels the acronyms I have just thrown at you are not as easy to understand as LOL, LMAO, BRB, or OMG, you may want to say, ROFL, NFW I would ever by from U! Your should really go back to Community Cloud and try to get a degree.
