SharePoint 2010 and System Center Service Manager (SCSM) 2010

Image
I ran into a challenge recently on making the SCSM web parts work with SharePoint 2010. This document describes how to make it work. A good chunk of this comes from the Deployment Document, but because it does not specifically address SharePoint 2010, the process has been adjusted. After you have SharePoint 2010 installed, you will need to install the SCSM web portal. Important : The account you use to run Self-Service Portal Setup must be a member of the Service Manager Administrator user role. You have to install the Self-Service Portal on the computer hosting SharePoint 2010: 1. You need to install the hotfix from KB975332 first! 2. On the System Center Service Manager 2010 installation media, double-click the Setup.exe file. 3. On the Microsoft System Center Service Manager 2010 page, click Install the Service Manager Web portals. 4. On the Product registration page, type information in the boxes. In the Product key boxes, type the product key you received with Service

SharePoint Saturday Richmond

Here comes another SharePoint Saturday! SharePoint Saturday is one of the best community building and learning environments out there. I say this not only because I try to be a part of it, but because the presenters really want to help people understand and learn the technology. Of course, you could go out there and pay between $900 and $3000 for a 2 day - 5 day conference and training session, but those same speakers are very likely going to be giving their time and money to present at SharePoint Saturday as well. For example, one of the best presenters out there is Dux Raymond Sy. He is a prolifent speaker and is often presenting at the other conferences such as SharePoint Symposium, Best Practices Conference and more. He will gladly hop on a plane and travel to San Ramon, California or Kansas City, Missouri to present for free at a SharePoint Saturday. But who pays for the SharePoint Saturday to take place? The vendors...and they don't pay a whole lot since it is mostly th

Considerations for selecting a SharePoint hosting provider

SharePoint hosting is not a new capability. In addition to the standard single instance hosting by a managed service provider, SharePoint has been available in a hosted service provider model since Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 (WSS 2.0). Microsoft tried to deliver hosted multi-tenant WSS 2.0 using bCentral until it was sold off to another hosted service provider. The problem is that it has only been WSS 2.0 or WSS 3.0. Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) 2007 did not have the multi-tenant functionality available for hosted service providers to use. But with the release of SharePoint 2010, this all changes and the providers are looking very carefully at how and when to deliver it for general use. This brings new questions to light on how to choose the right hosted service provider for your SharePoint environment. Here are some suggestions for your selection process: 1. How long have you been a hosted service provider? With companies realizing that the "cloud" is

Chevy Chase Bank to Capital One Transition Nightmare

It is amazing to me how badly Capital One planned and delivered this transition from Chevy Chase Bank to Capital One.Our issues started day 1 when they (A) moved the website, and (B) managed to have my wife's debit card number charging all over the country. The website moved so ALL of our software that helps us manage our money no longer worked...and continue to fail to work. Why? Because they moved the site URL AND they required a password change AND required me to answer those stupid questions about my mother's best friend's pet collar color in 1968. I really like the fact that it performed two factor authentication off of my debit PIN number. Up until this transition, I always knew my PIN number. So, I also use Mint to track finances and spending...but that doesn't work with Capital One. On top of this, the website does NOT show us what has been charged until the following day...This was not the case at Chevy Chase Bank. I was able to see all charges as they were p

Blue Toilet Water

Blue toilet water just makes me smile. This is especially the case in the public bathroom at the office. It doesn't have a tank so I am certain nobody else has used that toilet since it was cleaned. The blue water is so tranquil and it makes me happy to know that I will be the one person to take this tranquil caribbean blue happiness and destory it with my own bio-fuel. Ah, it is the little things. To catch anyone up who reads my blog and hasn't heard much from me...Andi is starting a company and will provide the first SharePoint cruise. Of course being the technogeek, I am obligued to build her websites for the SharePoint cruise (CruiseSharePoint.com) itself...and for the company (TechCruises.com). The Best Practices Conference #BPC is taking place in Reston which means I should be properly cooked for the entire week attending #SharePint after meeting outings. I am looking forward to meeting a few and reconnecting with many. I also have a oral presentation for a multimil

To the Parents of my Son-in-law

It appears we have a problem. The children are wanting to move away. They have no car, no place to live and no money for down-payments. However, they have a prospect in Maryland. Therefore, we are inviting you to dinner. A dinner of communcation and honesty.

Letter to McNair PTA President

Andi, I sincerely believe there is nobody who could have done this job as well as you. I am not just saying that because you are my wife, I am saying it as a parent of a child of the school. As PTA president, you have managed to pull off more than they will ever know (at least for a year). Your dedication to the school has been seen by many and is not as easily dismissed as Teresa portrays. Without your planning and complete commitment, this year would have been without all of the new clubs, without all of the new Odyssey of the Mind teams, without people’s jobs. You are the hub for everything in the school. I firmly believe this school will fall back into the disarray of years past and I honestly do not want my child to feel the consequences of the board’s and principal’s actions. I love you and believe in you. John

Look, I spent $8

Today, I went to see Robin Hood. The movie was a lot longer than it had to be...because the movie was considerably more boring than it had to be. But enough about the movie...let's talk about people. Some people, namely the people I scooted down the isle so they could have 6 seats next to each other, should NEVER go to the movie theater. NEVER! Look, when I go to the theater to see a movie (no matter how bad it is), I expect to see the movie without the additional soundtrack. If you are going to have a conversation, wait for it to come out on DVD and watch it in the comfort of your home and AWAY FROM ME! It is one thing when you have to tell them to be quiet, but when during the ENTIRE movie, the other people around them have to complain STFU!!!!!! We all spent hard earned money to watch an overpriced movie while eating overpriced popcorn and drinking overpriced soda so that we can watch an entirely too long and slow movie. So, the next time you want to have a conversation, go

Holidays and Family

Holidays have been notoriously ruined in our family. Halloween had terrible memories. July 4 has been a disaster in the past. And now...Easter. Politics are the cause of it all this time. Personally, I have always tried to avoid the topic of politics. I have a viewpoint and I try to learn everything from every side. Today was ruined by the health care reform bill. This is a hot topic in the first place and to add the fact that the Queen is mostly a democrat, and our child's husband has made his comments about the bill very vocal. The child in question supports her husband which is perfectly fine, but understanding the reactions of other people was something she was lacking. How did all of this go down? The younger child went to her sister's for a visit. A discussion broke out about the reform bill and the walk away her sister brought back to the family was "Shae and Ryan are Republicans". Now this may not necessarily be true...but the viewpoint is still there. S

Double-checking my Decision

So, I am sitting here...in my house...wondering if the path I have chosen is the path I should continue. I look constantly around at people, companies, government and I see so much to fix...and so little capabilities or influence. I think I have the answer to change one part of the world...I just wish I could hand it to somebody and have them run with it, but I know there are too many people out there who do not look past the "laws"  of now and into the possiblity that they are wrong. I need to complete several things over the next 11 months... I need to make the prototype. I need to prove it works. I need to lock in the patent. So, I guess my main question is, how? I know it would be worth it once it is done, but right now, I am more interested in the not-so-important things like sleep, relaxing, and just being myself. As of late, I feel like I am living somebody else life and have no time to have fun. I go to work, and I come home and crash. So what am I to do? Is this

Day 1 - Clarifying my Job

Today, my mission is to clarify what my objectives over the next year are here at work. I always try to do the best job I can possibly do, but lately my confidence has been shaken. Since I want to help the company move forward, I need to better define my responsibilities and help promote the business itself. This means that more meetings (which I hate because they often lead to little being accomplished) with key stakeholders so they understand where we are heading and when we will get there...This is another line in the sand. I also realize that I need to drop the inferred facial features (I tend to read people all the time) and background noise, and concentrate on the target. Therefore, today and tomorrow will be spent locking down the plan. I will review the plan with stakeholders and receive input from them. But...this is my day job. I cannot let my day job rule my nights and weekends any longer. I realize that I am in a field that demands on me to work 24x7, but for me to keep

New Passion...New Plan...New Life

Over the past few months, I have lost the passion I desperately need to survive this world. I lost where I was going and who I am. My Queen reminded me of something she read in a the Spark, a book written by the creator of SparkPeople. Place a line in the sand and move toward the line. This is much like the business off-site discussions we have for my current company, but it doesn't take it to a personal level. So here I sit, poised to deliver to the world my knowledge and draw my line in the sand. New Passion... I have had this invention running around in my head for the past few months which will revolutionize the entire world's ability to provide green energy. It is very simple and will change the face of the Earth. There are some protective things I need to accomplish before the invention is revealed, but I now have a plan as to how to accomplish that. My biggest challenge is going to be money, but once the patent is locked in internationally, that is when I will push t

18 Weeks?!

So, I have been trying to get a new driver's license. The state of Virginia requires that I provide a certified copy of my Birth Certificate even though I once had a Virginia driver's license about 5 years ago. Well, not to name names, but QueenSuchandSuch (keeper of all vital records) has lost my birth certificate, therefore, I have to request a new one from the state of California. There is a vital records web site that pointed me right to where I need to go to get my birth certificate. To expedite the request, it is submitted to the county I was born in. About 8 weeks later, I received...a letter. Because I am adopted, "the county does not keep me birth certificate on record. Thank you for you money. Check with the State of California in Sacramento." Nice...real nice. So, I go to the web site which says "they ONLY accept birth certificate request through the postal service. Please send us more money...and notorize this paper with your signature." I sn

Feminism in Words

Last night when I am suppose to be sleeping safe and sound I for some reason had a dream about a woman raising hell with me about how the female has been oppressed for all these years and are never getting a fair break. As I agree with the thought process and that women are not being paid equal pay for an equal job, this dream woman began to provide me a tirade on how history is completely written by men and that a womans perpective has been totally elimated by the same oppression mentioned previously. The we went into the deconstruction of words. "History, is just his story. That is after all how the word was made. Otherwise it would be Herstory." This is absolutely ludicrous. First of all, it is spelled wrong if that was the attempt. wouldn't it be Hisstory? um...NO. This type of thinking is what pushes back the feminist movement and causes people (men and women)  to think that feminist are just a bunch of nutbags in need of "special" attention. One straig
