#SPC12 Community Review

What an excellent time! I actually arrived a day earlier for the conference because I wanting to take a pre-conference session.

As exciting as the technology covered, and the challenges dealt with, SharePointers really know how to throw parties. For example, Sunday night, the registration and exhibit hall opened for all to come and wander about talking, drinking (this is repeated daily), and catching up with folks they haven’t seen face-to-face for a year.

This constant community is not new for SharePoint. There are several volunteer groups to include SharePoint User Groups, SharePoint Saturdays (now called SPS Events), Sharing the Point tours, and conferences like SharePoint Fest, SP Techcon, Connections, and Share. With each of these the vendors will throw parties or a group of people will go have a #SharePint.

This year at MS SharePoint Conference is no exception. There was the opening night drinks provided by FPWeb. Monday night, Symantec bought (that’s right..bought) the House of Blues for a huge SharePoint party, and at the same time, Blackberry bought LAX Nightclub for their bash. Not everyone was partaking in the schedule parties though. There was a #ShareInk (tattoo party), a #ShareCraps (gambling), #ShareStrip (you can guess), and a #ShareShoot (shooting all kinds of weapons). Needless to say, we place the word Share in front of everything to make it better!

Neudesic raised the bar on the SharePoint community though. They called up Jon Bon Jovi and the Kings of Suburbia and asked them to come to the Mandalay Bay to play for a bunch of SharePoint geeks. Of course this included an ocean of alcohol, finger foods, desserts and snacks and a beach. But why stop there? After Bon Jovi finished up his amazing performance, they finished it up with fireworks that would put many small towns 4th of July to shame.

But it is the talented SharePointers that make the difference. DJ Kameleon was the disc master at the house of Blues. He is also a SharePoint professional. The amazing host of the Bon Jovi concert was Dux Sy (who also played PSY in a flash mob on Monday doing it “Gangham Style”.

Tuesday night was excellent, but Wednesday night was the challenge of the other vendors. The Axceler was the party to beat apparently. I wasn’t able to attend (sold out), but I did follow a good portion of it from a #SharePint. The Lifeguard award featured a presenter that caused a stir… Pamela Anderson. I bet she never would have thought that a bunch of geeks could party so hard!

Thursday was a recovery day for many. Eric Harlan as usual was throwing…I mean passing 5 hour energy to people in his sessions. Dark bottles with dark room equals concussive projectiles.

Since Thursday was the last day for the show (competing with the Latin Grammy’s), many people were flying out. Those left behind did not stop the partying even after #SPC12 completed. #SharePoker, #ShareClubbing and #ShareRacing were still on agendas and anyone who wanted to join was welcome.
What did I do Thursday night? #ShareSlots… And I am leaving Las Vegas with more cash than I came with. It doesn’t get any better than that!
