The Internet is Killing Company Personality

Today, I received the following email:


Hi Everyone,

We have opening for SharePoint Developer in Vienna, VA. Please reply with your updated resume.

At what point did it become a best practice to try to recruit somebody without addressing them personally? Is this really the image a company wants to portray when it is recruiting someone to fill a position? Unfortunately, this is becoming the norm.

My experiences as of the last month have been as such:

I had 3 different people from the same company overseas try to recruit me for a position in the United States. All 3 called my mobile phone...repeatedly. All 3 emailed me. I replied back to one of them that I was not interested, but the other 2 kept emailing and calling. Finally, I had to get blunt and inform them that they need to communicate better internally if they are going to have 3 recruiters scouting the same position.

In another incident, an individual from a company overseas called me to offer me a position for a different company in the United States. I was working (which is when they all seem to call), and it went to voicemail. A 4 minute voicemail of a man speaking in another language to his coworker. He and his coworker both emailed me repeatedly about the position... thanks but no thanks.

Yet again, an individual from a company overseas called me to offer me a position for a company in the United States. This time, I talked to the individual, they asked me how long I have been a citizen of the United States, I stated all my life. I asked if he meant how long I have worked on SharePoint, or in technology... he said, no, how many years have I been in the US. I again stated all my life followed by "I was born in the US". This is the point where I figured out where he was going and figured out his motive. I asked for them to withdraw my resume. They claimed they couldn't it was already submitted.

Today...I received an email about a position in Washington from a recruiting company overseas. Granted, their email, mailing address, phone and so forth are in the US, but when they call or use their Skype phone numbers, you know they are really located elsewhere. They are masking. He sent me the job description and asked me to customize my resume to include facets the job description. I politely declined and stated that I am not going to present myself with the knowledge I may be lacking. I have seen a few people presented in this manner to my clients and when they get on site, they are lacking in the ability to perform the job.

This bring me to my point. If you are an American company, you may want to check how your outsourced recruiters are presenting themselves for you. As is, there is a language barrier, the conversations are hard to hear and understand, and they seem to "do anything necessary" to fill the seat instead of seeing if the candidate goals and client goals match up. They also could care less if you are currently working and the schedule associated with that.

For all of your recruiters who really want to understand my goals, my background and whether I match the culture of the client, thank you for reading. :) THIS is one of the reasons I have loved working at TEKsystems.
