Vodka on a Plane

Ever want to order two vodkas for that flight to Vegas? I did it. It makes the trip a whole new flight. To set the scene, i am heading to another SharePoint conference in Las Vegas. It has been a while since the last one because Microsoft decided to combine a bunch of conferences and make Ignite. Unfortunately, the SharePoint folks weren’t getting as much out of the conference than they did when it was SharePoint conference by itself.

But I digress, during this 4 hour flight to Las Vegas, I decided that a couple travel vodkas and orange juice was in order. The in-flight entertainment is boring and I wanted a drink. Tito’s is not my favorite, but the corn vodka is better than so many of the grain vodkas.

I picked the seat for my flight long ago when I booked. The seats near me were empty and I thought I was going to have a bit of room. I chose the aisle seat because I wanted the arm room. But when we boarded the plane I was pleasantly greeted with the back half of the plane coming from what I believe is Thailand. I understood nothing. Because it is a late night flight, they turn off the cabin lights. Ever taken a flight where only 3 people have reading lamps on? It is a much darker flying tube of metal. I can see the glow of four laptops as well.

So after imbibing on my alcoholic drinks, i took my empty cups back to “recycle” them. On the way, four people were sleeping and none were looking at an electronic device. It is kinda cool. One of the reading light people (caddy corner to me) keeps reading the same newspaper over and over. He either has a very short term memory or his phone doesn’t work. I am amazed at how many newspapers there are on this flight. I see 4 from my seat. There is a British sounding lady across the aisle from me who decided to order a travel bottle of wine. How come the vodka is soooo much smaller than the travel wine?

Sleepers. Everywhere there are sleepers. For people going to the city that never sleeps, these people appear to be preparing for the demands of not sleeping. They should just be like me and not sleep. How can they sleep? What upright position works best?

Across the aisle, a lady leans forward on her backpack and uses the neck pillow as a massage face peeking through the hole thing. Kinda clever actually. The lady next to me uses the neck pillow as a neck pillow. I tried to use one of those things once. I think it cut off the blood to my brain. There is just no way to get comfortable on a plane unless you are business or first class. The lay down seating was phenomenal.

While coming in for the landing, the plane is still dark and silent. So what do you do? Play Disturbed’s “Sound if Silence”. Listen to the words. It is just the perfect landing in Las Vegas song.
