Searching for a Hobby

I decided I need a hobby. This is actually a first for me. Normally, I am so wrapped up in technology solutions and researching how to bring that into my job, I would feel my hobby is technology. But my wife is right…shh, don’t tell her. I need some sort of hobby outside my normal day to day activity. I need something interesting. So I decided I need to research this using a website: http://nextluxury.com/mens-lifestyle-advice/top-75-best-manly-hobbies-for-men/ .

There are certain items in the list that interest me. Now I just need to figure out what is best for a city dweller like me in a small apartment.

Some I am going to skip because “that is just ridiculous”!

Cooking and grilling: I do like to cook. Grilling is a bit of a challenge, but this is an option.

Chess: yes. I do like chess and I am fairly decent at it. This is an option.

Rocketry: that would be cool. Wife says no.

Lockpicking: ohhhhh. Never thought of that!

Archery: I do like archery but I feel walking around with a bow and quiver on the bus may raise some questions and possibly get me shot.

Classic car restoration sounds fun but 1) I don’t have anywhere to work on a car, and 2) I know nothing about them so it would be a long learning curve.

Magic: hahahaha. No.

Cycling and mountain biking: yes! Just need a bike.

Photography: I sort of do this already. If you have seen my Instagram you know this. I do not use photography equipment though mostly because I don’t want to lug around a bunch of stuff.

Reading: I am picky about authors. However, I find a good author and I will chew right through those books.

Geocaching: yeah, so I never really thought about this and I think this may be a thing I give a try.

Writing: do you mean like this?

Darts: a smaller, less likely to get shot version of archery. OK. This is doable.

Sailing and canoeing: interestingly enough, this has been a consideration recently. There is a giant lake outside my window here in the Windy City.

Flying: I smiled at that one. My wife said she has to increase my life insurance first.

Billiards: another option I hadn’t seriously considered. There is a pool table in my building so I could get plenty of practice time.

Fencing: I would be a rather large target for that one. So, maybe not.

Volunteering: I do love helping people. I do this for helping others professionally.

Golfing: so way back in high school I played golf. There was two reasons for that..1) I had golf clubs and it wasn’t terribly physical and 2) there was this girl on the team. Now, it is a maybe.

Meditation and Yoga: (chuckles) I can see myself moving to some position that forces all of the air in my body out creating a green fog killing a dozen people.

Fishing: not sure I would fish in Lake Michigan. What did you catch John? Some guy named Vinnie.

Traveling: YES! Can I do it without paying for it or without having to camp? I don’t camp.

Bowling: I own a ball. There are lanes in the neighborhood. I should do that.

Foreign languages: I have Duolingo. I have learned some greetings in about a dozen languages. I still feel I don’t fully have a grasp of my primary language of English.

Genealogy: I think that finding my birth-family on both sides when they didn’t even know each other after a 50 years search is enough.

Movie watching: I am pretty much a pro watcher.

Dancing: I love to dance. I would love to dance more. I look silly dancing. I am vain. See the conflict?

Watchmaking: not something I would have ever thought about. But very interesting option. Great for those days stuck indoors. This is a serious consideration.

Camping: please see traveling. I don’t camp.

Model crafting: I did this as a kid. Getting high on model glue, making plastic cars and planes that I have no idea what happened with them. I really don’t know if this is my kind of thing anymore. Maybe.

Now of course there were some technology things in the list that I am such I can do, but I am at the point where I need something outside of technology. Something outside of always coming up with business ideas. Something to just change how my brain is used every day. So if there is an idea not in the linked list that I may want to consider, leave a comment.

I just bought a new telescope and have been spending a lot of time looking at the stars again. November is a great month for stargazing... lots of meteor showers this time of year
