Cinco de Mayo! Ole!

Happy Cinco de Mayo everyone! So...do you know what we are celebrating? For all of you SMART people, it is Mexican Independence Day. For all of those not-so-smart people, it is Mexican Independence Day. Independence from what you ask? But of course it is an independence from the those pesky Spanish that were hostile to the Mexican people.

Actually, no.

The holiday of Cinco De Mayo, The 5th Of May, commemorates the victory of the Mexican militia over the French army at The Battle Of Puebla in 1862. It is primarily a regional holiday celebrated in the Mexican state capital city of Puebla and throughout the state of Puebla, with some recognition in other parts of the Mexico, and especially in U.S. cities with a significant Mexican population. It is not, as many people think, Mexico's Independence Day, which is actually September 16. (citing reference)

Why is it in America we celebrate Cinco de Mayo? My thought is we just need a reason to drink tequila and margaritas. Some of us do not need a reason at all. How it is the translation of the day became Americanized as Mexican Independence Day?

This brings me to my point (as I almost always have one). I think we need a Native American reservation day. This would celebrate the containment of all of the Natives on the worst possible pieces of land in the U.S. We could celebrate Polish sausage day and Groundhog day to celebrate...the groundhog?

At what point do we say enough is enough? If Cinco de Mayo is a regional holiday celebrating a battle, why are we involved? Well, I am heading to the Mexican bar for some Margaritas. Happy Cinco de Mayo everyone!

Did you know...

Mexico was the first country to host the World Cup (soccer) twice.

Oh, you are facetious to a whole new level. I like it.

I live in America, and I acknowledge Groundhog Day (mostly because it is on the news every year) but I don't actually know what it means. Or why we "celebrate" that day, other than it is supposed to signify whether or not Winter will stay.

Why did we choose a groundhog for this task of determining and predicting the weather??

Hi N8...
Sorry I haven't been by here in a while, but I always forget about blogspot...

A while back, you said you had an address and a name of an "ear" at Maytag. I kind of forgot all about it until today, when I've had another "run" with my lovely appliance, and I'm ready to go postal on someone -- let's just say I'm ready to see if someone at the top will listen to me before I take the thing onto the front lawn and put an M-80 into it.

Could you e-mail me and let me know who this hotshot is so I can have a try?

Thanks. I have my Xanga set up to e-mail me.
