Nightmares

I woke up this morning from a nightmare. I rarely have nightmares. The thing that made last night's dream so bad was the environment. I can usually control my environment in dreams. I can control the weather, the location of items, day or night. But last night, I was at a loss.

It started like almost every other dream that I am able to remember. Nothing significant happening and then pieces start falling into place. As they fall into place, I mentally move them to my benefit.

Then I got blind-sided. I was at work with co-workers without faces and a female was chewing me up and down because I had not done enough research to answer a question. I had not planned for what I had not forecasted. Normally I can rely on my body language and people reading/reasoning skills to bring them off the ledge and come to a solution. But tonight (the dream takes place at night) is not the case. I begin looking around the room for my control point and I see nothing but the lady standing screaming at me at this point, and the table.

The lady is not a familiar face and is feared by many. I was at wits end when my now fired CIO walks into the white room. I am actually relieved to see him. When she sees him, she calms down from ear breaking screech to a low mumble. He can clearly see I am in some sort of pain and he pulls us both out of the stark white room and into the hallway...which is a dungeon. He walks her to one cell to cool down and takes me to another.

Believe it or not, even in the dungeon of rock and steel, I feel in danger. Danger. Not a feeling I would associate to the fact that I am rescued. But in the back of my head, I feel as if I have been saved from the public slamming and fed to the cobras. I again looked for my contact points. No moon, no insignia, no flower, no bird, no squirrel. All of them were missing. I was out of control, and it was getting worse.

It was the alarm clock that pulled me out.

This brings me to my point (as I almost always have one). Get a good alarm clock. I actually believe that your brain tries to sort things out in your head and if it stumbles across something it cannot resolve, that is when the nightmare begins. My nightmares involve being out of control of a situation more often than not.

I think that when people die in their sleep, it is due to dreams and nightmares. These people have lost control of their dreams and are caught in a no-win situation. Their body shuts down as a reboot and never comes back online.

Keep touch points. These are certain items that recur in dreams that will help you come out of it. If all else fails, buy a good alarm clock.

Did you know (I have had this and it is scary)...

Sleep paralysis is a condition characterized by temporary paralysis of the body shortly after waking up (known as hypnopompic paralysis) or, less often, shortly before falling asleep (known as hypnagogic paralysis).
